Terms of Service

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of French Bites (the "Service"). By using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.

1. The Service

French Bites helps you learn French verb conjugation through a verb search & conjugation matrix, spelling quizzes, and short practice dialogues ("Scenarios"). Some content — including example sentences, quiz sentences, and audio — is written or generated specifically to illustrate grammar and conjugation, as detailed in our Disclaimer.

2. Eligibility & age

French Bites is intended for a general audience learning French. You can use Search, Quiz, and Scenario without an account, at any age, with progress saved only on your own device.

To reduce confusion from different age-of-consent rules across countries (13–16 depending on jurisdiction), we use a single, more protective threshold everywhere: 16. If you create an account, one of the following applies:

• You are 16 or older — you register with your own email, as normal.
• You are under 16 — a parent or legal guardian registers and manages the account on your behalf, using their own email rather than a separate "child" email or date of birth.

At sign-up, we ask you to confirm this via a checkbox — a self-declaration, not an identity check. We do not knowingly allow a child under 13 to register directly (i.e. without a parent/guardian registering on their behalf). See the "Children's privacy" section of our Privacy Policy for details.

3. Accounts

• You're responsible for keeping your login credentials confidential and for all activity under your account.
• Provide accurate information when creating an account (e.g. a real, working email address).
• We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms, are used fraudulently, or are inactive for an extended period.
• You can delete your account at any time by contacting us at privacy@frenchbites.app.

4. Billing (if we introduce paid features)

French Bites is currently free to use, with no paid plans. If we introduce a paid tier or one-off purchases in the future, the following will apply:

• Payment will be tied to the email already registered on your account — we won't ask you to register again or collect a second email for billing.
• For an account registered by a parent/guardian on behalf of a learner under 16 (see "Eligibility & age" above), that parent/guardian's payment method is what gets charged — since they are the one who registered the account, this is self-consistent.
• Before completing checkout, you will be asked to confirm a short statement to the effect of: "I am an adult, or I am an adult paying on behalf of a minor in my care." Payment will not proceed without this confirmation.
• We will not store your full card details ourselves; payments will be handled by a third-party payment processor, subject to that processor's own terms.
• We'll update this section with the specific provider and refund policy before any paid feature goes live.

5. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

• Use automated tools to scrape, bulk-download, or republish our verb, example-sentence, or audio database.
• Attempt to disrupt, overload, or gain unauthorized access to the Service or its underlying systems.
• Use the Service for any unlawful purpose, or to harass, impersonate, or harm others.
• Circumvent any access or rate limits we put in place.

6. Intellectual property

The Service — including its design, code, verb data, example sentences, scenario dialogues, illustrations, and audio — is owned by French Bites or used under license, and is protected by copyright and other intellectual property laws. We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the Service for your own language learning. You may not copy, resell, or redistribute the content for commercial purposes without our written permission.

7. Educational content, not professional advice

French Bites is a self-study tool, not a certified language course or a substitute for a qualified teacher. We make a good-faith effort to keep grammar explanations and examples accurate, but we do not guarantee that the content is error-free, complete, or sufficient to pass any specific exam or certification (e.g. DELF, DALF, TCF). See our Disclaimer for more detail on how to treat example sentences and AI-generated audio.

8. No warranty

The Service is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including — to the extent permitted by law — warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not guarantee the Service will be uninterrupted, timely, secure, or error-free.

9. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, French Bites and its team will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of data, learning outcomes, or exam results, arising from your use of (or inability to use) the Service. Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited under applicable law.

10. Third-party services

The Service relies on third-party providers (e.g. Supabase for authentication and data storage, Google for optional sign-in and fonts, and our hosting provider). Your use of those features is also subject to those providers' own terms and privacy policies.

11. Termination

You may stop using the Service, or delete your account, at any time. We may suspend or terminate access to the Service, in whole or in part, if you breach these Terms or if we discontinue the Service.

12. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of [insert your country/state of incorporation or residence], without regard to its conflict-of-laws principles, except where local consumer-protection law requires otherwise. (Placeholder — update this with your actual jurisdiction before publishing.)

13. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. We'll update the "Last updated" date above when we do. Continuing to use the Service after changes take effect means you accept the updated Terms.
